Why Volunteers Matter
The Sub Zero Mission is built on volunteers. They are the ones behind every fundraiser, every collection drive, every warehouse shift sorting and packing warming items. Volunteers give their evenings and weekends to host events, gather donations, and make sure every coat, hat, and sleeping bag is ready when the cold sets in. Without this foundation, the Mission simply would not move forward.
However, gathering the items is only part of the story. At the very front lines – the tip of the spear – are the Blue Coat Missionaries. These are the volunteers who go beyond the preparation and step into the night itself. They load buses, trek through snow, and walk into camps to meet people where they are. The blue coat they wear is both practical safety gear and a badge of honor, earned through service. Each coat represents a volunteer who has carried warmth and hope directly to those who need it most.
This partnership – the many who prepare and the few who deliver – is what makes the Mission possible. Every outreach depends on the combined effort: events that fund the work, logistics that move the gear, clear shifts and simple onboarding that bring in new hands, and ultimately the courage of those who carry the fight against the cold into the streets. Together, volunteers transform donations into action, despair into hope, and cold nights into second chances.
Meet The Bears — Our Event and Fundraising Crew
The Bears are the powerhouse behind many of The Sub Zero Mission’s fundraising and community events.
Made up of more than 110 dedicated volunteers, this team embodies the spirit of “have fun and get it done!”
From running raffles and registration tables to managing auctions, setting up stages, and packing gear for events, The Bears bring unmatched energy to every effort. Together, they make large-scale events like the Bowl for the Mission, Motorcycle Run, Reverse Raffle, Golf Outing, and 5K Race possible.
In FY24 alone, The Bears contributed over 2,000 volunteer hours, helping raise hundreds of thousands of dollars and tens of thousands of warming items for those in need. Their teamwork, passion, and sense of camaraderie are a driving force behind the Mission’s success.
